Railwatch 087 - March 2001

Yorkshire

By Peter Davies Peter.P.G.Davies@tesco.net

Leeds 1st Scheme Problems with delays to the completion of a major phase of the £165million scheme to improve rail access to and from the station led to inconvenience to rail passengers. Rail services did not regain any sense of normality until two weeks after the completion date of the Christmas 2000 phase of the scheme.

Wakefield (Kirkgate) Concern has been expressed with regard to the deteriorating condition of this station, and this is highlighted in the forthcoming annual report of the Yorkshire Branch - Yorkshire Rail Review 2000. There is a lack of information at the station, and no waiting or toilet facilities provided.

Brighouse Additional peak-hour train services are calling at the station until May 2001 to and from Leeds. Direct services between Leeds and Bradford are being re-routed via the Calder Valley owing to engineering work at Leeds.

Airedale and Wharfedale lines The new class 333 electric multiple units are now entering service on these lines, replacing the ageing class 308 units which are being phased out.

Horsforth A new rail user group has been formed in the Horsforth area of north Leeds, under the title Harrogate Line Rail Users Group.

Annual MeetingThe Annual General Meeting of the Yorkshire Branch was due to be held at the Queens Hotel, Leeds, on Saturday 17 March, 2001. Invited to be the guest speaker was David Bertram, former chairman of the Central Rail Users Consultative Committee.

Annual Report The Yorkshire Rail Review, 2000 will shortly be available from membership secretary Graham Collett, 16 Wilstrop Farm Road, Copmanthorpe, York, North Yorkshire. The £1.50 price includes postage. Make cheques payable to RDS Yorkshire.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
