Lincolnshire

By Paul Jowett

Rail 150 The Boston Rail 150 event in September was very well planned and successful. New members were recruited by the local rail user group. Rain in October however dampened the Lincoln 150th anniversary of the Great Northern Railway arriving in the city.

Tuned in Residents of Heighington managed to get coverage on BBC Radio Lincs in October for their campaign for a station in their village.

Freight Steel traffic from Boston docks is now building up and there is a possibility of timber traffic.

Bus-rail Government bus grants have been used by the county council to reinstate a bus service from Woodhall Spa to connect with trains at Metheringham. Market Rasen also gets some buses to connect with rail services.

Time for a rethink One large firm wanting to re-locate at New Sleaford Enterprise Park and needing a rail freight service has discovered that there are no plans for a rail connection. The district council has already been asked to reconsider its decision.

Right track Railway route protection measures are now written into the county's structure plan.

Reopening Further feasibility studies into new stations at Donington, Pinchbeck, and Sibsey are proposed in the latest Transport Policies and Programme document.

Sparks fly A detailed feasibility study is under way into possible electrification of Newark-Lincoln after an initial study. The possibility of some form of park-and-ride station is also being mooted for Lincoln West.

Holiday rush The line to Skegness was so busy at some periods this year - particularly school holiday weekends - that buses were still needed to supplement the trains. More rolling stock is needed. Long weekend breaks at Butlins are putting pressure on Friday and Monday services.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
