Study to reopen Bangor- Caernarfon The branch welcomes the study being undertaken on behalf of Gwynedd County Council into reopening this stretch of line, a cause we have championed for years. However should the study be positive we trust that any reopening is as an extension of the national rail network. We doubt the ability of a narrow gauge line to solve traffic problems or encourage economic development.
Plea for more car parking The branch feels that more passengers could be attracted to the North Wales coast line if better car parking facilities were provided. Bangor, Llandudno Junction, Colwyn Bay and Rhyl all suffer from inadequate facilities in this respect. As the line is now paralleled by a dual carriageway for much of its length it is all too easy for potential passengers to drive to their destination.
New freight traffic At last some good news. Mostyn Docks has recently secured a large contract to export steel to Ireland. Much of this steel arrives by rail and a daily freight service is in prospect. It would be a simple matter to extend this service beyond Mostyn to cater for any other traffic flows.
New trains By the time this is in print most services in North Wales should be worked by new class 175 units. We welcome their introduction and look forward to a faster, more reliable service in due course.
