Light relief

Members of RDS attending the AGM at Croydon were pivileged to ride on the London borough’s new trams, 10 days before the system opened – and years after being approved by the last Tory government. It should make life easier for everyone.

New Labour also seems to be recognising the importance of light rail. It has approved a funding package to allow work to start on the Nottingham Express Transit scheme and Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott said: “I hope the 10-year plan we are working on will enable us to finance other light rail schemes nationwide.” London certainly needs many more tram schemes, including one between King’s Cross, Euston and Waterloo stations.

Full marks to London Mayor Ken Livingstone who has pledged never to use a chauffeur-driven car. After his election victory, he said: “I have renewed my season ticket.”
