Tunnel vision Members in South Hampshire have been busy handing out leaflets and writing letters of support in favour of the rapid transit project which is to run from Fareham to Gosport using the former rail trackbed, then under the harbour to Portsmouth. Branch chairman Steve Rackett presented the RDS case at a public inquiry in February, and we await the Government's decision.

Return ticket The return of regular passenger services to the Romsey-Eastleigh line after 30 years represents a triumph for our long-running branch campaign. Wales & West is to route certain Bristol-Southampton services via the route from summer 1999 to serve Southampton Airport. With trains running again, a "Please Stop!" campaign will highlight the opportunity to reopen the intermediate station at Chandler's Ford.

Cheers for Chineham A new station serving this fast-growing township on the northern edge of Basingstoke now stands a good chance of going ahead, thanks to a deal over funding agreed with a property developer.

Basingstoke for the East! The first brand new services for Hampshire since rail privatisation are planned by Anglia Railways which hopes to start a service between Basingstoke and Ipswich by 2002, routed via the North London line, Staines and Woking.
