Local Action

London and South East

By Simon Martin

All branch members will have received a call to lobby John Prescott, with their Railondon, over the surface rail powers of the new London mayor. All the signs are that the Government is prepared to look at their proposals again which could give London a fully integrated and controlled transport authority for the first time.

Branch members in Coastway have coordinated our response to the SERPLAN report, liaising with local authorities and producing a very good new leaflet about upgrading their services. This should be available with the next Railondon

In conjunction with the National Executive we are hosting Rail South East in March.

The branch also hopes to be working with Epsom and Ewell Borough council on a Borough Forum in March. This will be a useful place to build our local users group. We will also be working to try to establish a Chingford Line Users Group and begin the debate around a London Underground users group. It is crucial that the passenger's voice is heard.

The branch's annual report is available from secretary Paul Krebs, 24 Bartok House, 30 Lansdowne Walk, London W11 3LT in return for an SAE.

The new station at Feltham is on line to be completed by the end of March. Importantly, this new link to Heathrow is going to be Travelcard friendly which means it should be a more useful link for many Londoners than Heathrow Express.
