This
is what almost everyone wants to see - road trailers transferred to rail, a fine
example of integrated transport. The event was the launch of Freightliner's piggyback
service for Exel Logistics from Manchester to Tilbury, Essex.
Less than a month later, Railtrack's freight director Robin Gisby said Railtrack had "mothballed" plans to raise the gauge on the West Coast main line for piggyback because it was "commercially unviable". He dismissed piggyback as a "niche market".
