A Charter for Country Lanes

More than 70% of cars exceed the speed limit in built-up areas and more than 90% of lorries exceed the limit on dual carriageways even though drivers have been repeatedly told that the faster they go the more chance there is of killing or injuring pedestrians and cyclists, according to official figures. A new campaign to restore peace to Britain's country lanes by reducing speed limits from 60mph to 40mph is being supported by the Council for the Protection of Rural England and other groups, including ramblers, cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders. The campaigners also want a 20mph maximum in villages. A Charter for Country Lanes calls for some lanes to be designated as a route where drivers have to give way to walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Norfolk is already trying out some rural traffic-calming schemes.
