Cycle action

Hundreds of pounds were raised by RDS members who took part in two sponsored cycle rides this summer.

On 16 May, David Henshaw and Altannia Martinez raised 39.50 and 48.00 respectively by pedalling to Ventnor, Isle of Wight; while Peter Atkinson, who clocked up 220 miles on a round trip from Bethnal Green, raised 86.25.

On 6 June, Ray King and family, Trevor Garrod, Clara Zilahi, Agnes Harknett, Rob Archer and David Scully cycled by various routes to Watlington, West Norfolk, where they were met by West Anglia Great Northern external relations manager Mike Lamport and local RDS members.

Over 400 was raised, mainly for the Rail Defence Fund (which enables RDS to help local campaigns against cuts and closures) and the East Anglian Branch fund to provide better cycle facilities at Watlington station.

This station, formerly called Magdalen Road, was reopened largely thanks to the efforts of a small local group led by an RDS member, the late Ron Callaby. WAGN has promised to supplement the money raised by RDS and we hope that improved facilities will be provided with this cash during the next few months.

En route to Watlington, some of the riders inspected Littleport station, where the only access to the platforms is by a steep flight of concrete steps. Proper disabled and cycle access here could be a suitable new project once the Watlington one is completed.
