New rail link A suspension bridge is being proposed across the river Severn between Sharpness and Lydney to provide another rail link between England and Wales. The bridge, which could be used by cyclists and pedestrians, is the idea of the Forest of Dean district council which has applied to the Millenium Commission for funding.
Growing custom There have been several objections to the closure of Filton station, even though the new Filton Abbey Wood station is already used by more than 370 people, a number expected to grow to 500 very soon. Most work at the new Ministry of Defence offices.
Fume relief A car-free day has been proposed for 17 June next year for Bristol, a city where cars dominate. More people would leave their cars at home if there were new stations at Corsham and Newton (Bath), a proposal which is being studied by consultants who are looking at the Bristol to Chippenham "corridor".
Regular users More trains are now calling at Cam and Dursley station which opened in 1994 and attracts about 60 people a day.
Progress 12 trains each day are expected to serve Ashchurch (for Tewkesbury) station when it opens in May. It is hoped private buses will serve the large catchment area and also enable tourists to reach Toddington for the preserved Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway as well as Broadway village.
Park and ride In a bid to reduce car commuting into Gloucester, plans to reopen Newnham station or a new park-and-ride station nearby are under consideration.
New "town" Planners are puzzling how to give a rail option to people who move into 10,000 new homes to be built in Swindon. It could involve using the old Midland and South Western line to Cricklade.
Old idea Another old line - from Kemble to Cirencester - could be brought back into action to provide services to Gloucester if a new chord was built at Kemble.
Re-think Plans to reopen Chipping Campden station are being reconsidered by Gloucestershire County Council.
