North West

By Robert Cummings

Wrexham folly The Branch has objected to the closure and relocation of Wrexham Central Station (Yes it is in Wales but is served by trains from North West England). Given Government and local authority protestations about curbing car use and promoting public transport, it is a nonsense that this station is being closed to make way for a car park. In addition, the station is being moved away from the town centre and bus station.

Ultimate penalty Oxenholme station in Cumbria recently achieved national notoriety after problems were reported by passengers not able to get off trains and being carried on to Lancaster or Penrith. In one sad case the distress of being overcarried is said to have contributed to the death of one passenger. Allegations were made by one national newspaper that Railtrack's high penalties for late running were responsible for hurrying stops.

Future branch meetings: Saturday 25 January at Manchester Central Library (opposite St Peters Square Metrolink); Saturday 22 March - Annual meeting and dinner at the Oak Lea Hotel, Albert Road, Blackpool. A three course meal will cost £5.95. Please note these dates, as both are different to those previously advertised.
