Local Action

London and Home Counties

By Simon Martin

Action stations The future of rail campaigning was debated at an activists' meeting in central London which also involved other organisations. We were able to lay plans for the run-up to the election.

Open door The South West division of the branch has completed a leaflet about rail links to Chessington. We plan to link with Labour and Liberal Democrats to distribute the leaflet along the line. Railtrack is now showing interest and we may be pushing at an open door. A joint meeting with colleagues in Wessex is planned. The next meeting will be on 5 December at 19.45 in Battersea library. All welcome.

West Watch We will be launching a new division to cover the area of Thames Trains from Paddington.

Look North The Northern division has been responding to franchise documents and has held meetings with Chiltern Lines and Thameslink. More volunteers are needed and a mail drop is planned.

Euro link The East Kent division meet on 7 December after producing a leaflet on Ashford International station. Colleagues in France have been asked to set up a committee to keep an eye on the continental operations of Eurostar.

Capital Connection A London-wide forum was set up in November by the branch, headed by Keith Dyall. It will deal with Thameslink 2000, the Underground, CrossRail, orbital links, the Travelcard and will campaign for an effective transport authrity for London.
