Railwatch 078 - December 1998

Thames Valley

By Chris Wright

Inspector Les Price told RDS members in October about some of the problems facing the British Transport Police in fighting crime on the railways. Inspector Price, who is in charge at Reading, also talked about the impact of rail privatisation on the force.

Chiltern Railways managing director Adrian Shooter will talk to the branch on 6 March at Bicester about the progress being made by his company.

Possible sites for new stations at Aylesbury are included in Aylesbury Vale's draft local plan. Quainton Road and Winslow are also given protection for possible reopening in conjunction with the East-West rail link.

Restoring rail services between Milton Keynes, Oxford and Aylesbury feature in the Transport Policies and Programme bid by Milton Keynes Council which is also seeking assurances that West Coast main line upgrading will not prevent the reopening of Castlethorpe station.

One developer wants to fund an Aylesbury South station close to Stoke Mandeville Hospital as part of a plan to build 330 houses in the area.

The Oxfordshire Transport Policies and Programme bid for 1999-2000 also features a new rail station at Grove/ Wantage. A site has been identified and planning permission is to be sought.

The "white elephant" flyover at Bletchley is soon to be used for works trains for the upgrading of the West Coast main line. Maybe one day it will also carry East-West link trains. Trains do now run from Bristol to Oxford, with more being added for the winter timetable, and further development is planned for next year. These trains will eventually also stop at Grove/Wantage once it is built. The works trains will probably run from Hinksey where there have been protests about Railtrack using rail land for stockpiling materials.

High Wycombe station could be redeveloped in a £10m scheme which Chiltern Railways has presented to High Wycombe council for approval.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
