North West

By Robert Cummings

Blackpool lovers The resort that never sleeps and, until recently, the place no one wanted to run London trains to, finds itself with two operators falling over themselves to link the town with the capital. Both Virgin and North Western Trains have thrown their hats into the ring for services commencing in May, 1998. Virgin is also offering Cross Country trains to various parts of the country. Now, call me Mr Cynic, but where have the shiny new trains to run these services been hiding? Both operators may have ordered new rolling stock but these will be no bigger than Hornby models by the time May comes around.

Fleetwood It is good to see RDS affiliates, the Blackpool and Fylde Rail Users' Association, in the company of the town's MP, local councillors, development agencies and an engineering consultant, campaigning for the restoration of a railway to Fleetwood. Ports and railways should be natural allies and it is great to see EWS getting back into more and more of them. Given that a line currently serving an ICI works, stops just short of the town, one hopes that Fleetwood will soon rejoin the network, for passengers and freight.

The North West branch has objected to the closure of the centrally located Pendleton station.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
