Railwatch 075 - April 1998

Mid Wales

By Chris Magner

Cambrian lines Several speed restrictions may soon be lifted following £10 million worth of work carried out during weekend closures between January and April. But efforts to bring freight back are hampered by delays to the £1.3 million Barmouth bridge repairs which will now not take place until next year. No locomotive-hauled train has been allowed over the bridge since 1994. Central Trains is planning to use more rolling stock this year following a record number of passengers last summer.

New railways A public inquiry is taking place into plans to reopen Dinas to Porthmadog following the success of the Caernarfon to Dinas section. Residents, farmers and the Snowdonia Trust fear the railway will attract too much car traffic!

Station hopes Rail users at Hope, near Wrexham, are hoping for improvements to their station after news that Railtrack is spending £1.9 million on steelwork, the roof and other upgrading at Holyhead station.

Happy birthday Faster and more frequent trains could result from the 150th anniversary celebrations on the Chester-Shrewsbury line. A £12,000 study into the line's future has started and RDS is hoping local councils will support the reopening of Baschurch, Whittington, Weston Rhyn, Cefn, Johnstown and Rossett stations. We would also like to see the 70mph line speed raised, first to 75mph, and then to 90mph. A charity ball, exhibition, book and real ale festival are also planned for the anniversary.

Reopenings Quarry sidings at Bayston Mill near Shrewsbury are to reopen soon. The line to the army's supply depot at Donnington may also be reopened.

Integration Because of congestion on the M6 a bus service from Shrewsbury to Birmingham, run by Williamsons Coachways, is to be diverted to Telford where Birmingham-bound passengers can catch the train.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
